Old Fort Western is dedicated to providing visitors with a window into the lives of Colonial-era residents of Maine. A National Historic Landmark, the fort itself was built in 1754 and is America's oldest surviving wooden fort. Old Fort Western also features the original store showcasing farming and forestry tools, and the family house still furnished with authentic period pieces, place settings and artwork. This popular attraction is centrally located in the downtown area, on the East bank of the Kennebec River.
